Sawm: Fasting in Ramadan

Sawm means fasting, and once a year, during the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from the first light of dawn until sunset. During these hours they take no food or drink, stepping back from physical comforts to focus on God, prayer, and self-reflection. Each evening the fast is broken with gratitude, often shared with family and friends.

Ramadan is far more than going without food. It is a month of patience, generosity, and renewal. Hunger softens the heart and reminds you of those who go without every day. Many Muslims read more of the Quran, give more in charity, and try to let go of harsh words and bad habits during this special time.

There is a deep joy woven through Ramadan that surprises many newcomers. Families gather for the pre-dawn meal and the sunset breaking of the fast. Mosques fill with night prayers. The shared discipline creates a warm sense of togetherness that lasts long after the month ends.

Islam is gentle and practical about fasting. Those who are ill, travelling, pregnant, nursing, elderly, or otherwise unable are excused, and may make up the days later or feed someone in need instead. If you are new, you can ease into fasting at your own pace. God values your sincere effort far more than perfection.
