Hajj: The Pilgrimage

Hajj is the pilgrimage to Mecca, the sacred city in Arabia, which every Muslim aims to make once in a lifetime if they are physically and financially able. It takes place during a specific season each year, drawing millions of believers from every corner of the earth to the same few square miles of holy ground.

At the centre of Hajj stands the Kaaba, a simple cube-shaped house that Muslims believe was first built by the Prophet Abraham, peace be upon him, to worship the one God. Pilgrims walk around it, retrace the footsteps of Abraham's family, and stand together in prayer, reliving a story of faith thousands of years old.

One of the most moving sights of Hajj is its equality. Pilgrims wear simple white garments, so that king and labourer look exactly alike. Wealth, race, and status fall away, and everyone stands before God as a humble servant. It is a living picture of how all people are equal in His sight.

Hajj is required only once, and only for those who can truly afford the journey and are healthy enough to make it. If it is beyond your reach, you carry no blame at all.
